SUNDAY MORNING EDUCATION

Our active Sunday Morning Educational Program for chidlren spans from cradle to senior high. The curriculum entitled “Seasons of the Spirit” by the Whole People of God is used by a core team of talented teachers in our Sunday morning classes. We give special thanks and praise to all who work with our young people during the year:

Church Sunday School Teachers: Alan Bansbach, Martha Cuthbert, Delores Devito, Teisha Maldonado, Paula Morisey, JoAnn O'Neill, Stephanie Perkins, Nicole Rivera, Patty Singh, Sean Singh, Nancy Straub, Mary Trabert

Our Christian Education program continues with three Sunday school classes:

Seasons of the Spirit: Toddlers and Threes
The Seasons of the Spirit curriculum will be used. A short Bible story each week and a variety of hands-on activities including art, block play, puzzles, games music and movement form the back drop for great community building activities.

Seasons of the Spirit:  Kindergarten Through Teens
Our Sunday school curriculum, Seasons of the Spirit, follows the lectionary. Each Sunday morning our youth are responding to and engaging in activities based on the same biblical passages or themes presented in worship. This provides our families an opportunity to share together at home. This program also incorporates a wide variety of teaching methods and learning styles.

Children's Sermons
The children are in worship for the first fifteen mintues. Each Sunday a children's sermon lays out the theme for the morning and the key scriptual text. The children then explore the theme in their respective classes. A dedicated group pf teachers share their faith with the youth in practical hand on ways.

Confirmation Class
Four of our youth met once a month with our seminarian, Russ Roth, to prepare for church membership. Each youth had a mentor who attended the class with them. We are grateful to Russ Roth, our youth, and their mentors for their commitment to delving deeper into what we believe and what it means to belong to God and a faith community.
On Easter Sunday the youth joined the church. if you are interested in confirmation for your child (12 years and older) please contact staff@calvarystandrews.org

Russ Roth, Manny Colon, Zach Bansbach, James Pardee, James Bansbach, and Connor Cerosuolo   road from Jerusalem, NY to the Pultney Presbyterian Church and back--a total of twenty-five miles.

                                                Youth Campout

Parents, adults and youth left the sights of the city behind for the open country on July 17 through the 19th. The road trip to Jerusalem, NY seemed miles from anywhere to the new kids. For those who made the trip the last couple of years the excitement was in the air. Wet feet and clothes from climbing in the creek, sore arms from too many horseshoe games and rain did not dampen the enthusiasm. A twenty-five mile ride through the hills and valleys spun off energy. The youth are getting adept at pitching a tent as well as cooking meals and in clean-up.  Saturday afternoon the group went to the State park for swimming and showers. The time in the country is priceless as the youth and adults have an opportunity to find Sabbath rest and relaxation. The fact that God made bugs and mosquitoes is for some of the youth incomprehensible---"what's up with that?"

A hearty lunch after a long ride, and blueberry picking. "Ah the country air is delicious"

"So I wasn't a scout...."

Special Gatherings

Christian Education gatherings for parents, teachers and youth are held throughout the year. After sharing a meal together, time is spent sharing ideas for improving our program, planning youth activities, and discussing topics of interest. We also plan several community building activites such bowling and sledding. The teachers and parents have a chance to plan and reflect on programming while the youth get an oppotunity to fellowship.

" I like our time because we have fruit", says Micahel Singh of the family night gatherings.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

Members of our church family worked many hours to retell the story of the birth of Jesus. Each year this story is always unique and comes from the hearts and souls of our youth and adults. This service is a special Christmas gift for all who attended. At the early service on Christmas Eve the church is filled with animals-sheep and a dinosaur that appeared in our worship.

                  ADULT EDUCATION

Exploration of the Bible in classes entitled Bible 101 empower folks to gain knowledge of the Bible through reflection and sharing of insights. The Bible and Archelogy has been the focus of several classes with Russ Roth. At different times, a group of folks meet at the church to study the Bible and to pray. The participants share insights and questions about the Bible. Through discussions, videos and personal testimony, the group wrestles with theological and practical questions of faith. Adult is provided by lay and clergy teachers on such topics as Spirituality and Health, Archeology and the Bible, Acts, Bible 101, and social justice issues.

          SPIRITUALITY AND HEALTH SERIES

Last summer an idea began to emerge to focus intentionally in our adult education classes on Spirituality and Health. An insightful program by Cathy Hall kicked off the series and wove spirituality and health together. She shared simple tips to begin a new exercise and health awareness. Several folks who said, "We need to look at health issues and our body from a faith perspective". Spawned by that conversation came the Spirituality Walking group. They have seized the day and taken walks on the canal after church. Ginny Weisel and Marsha Reed's presentation in October focused attention on stress reduction at home and in the workplace. Ginny shared very easy practical massage techniques that an individual can perform on her/his self to reduce stress. In November Sue Tufts presented a program on the Wegman's theme "Eat Well Live Well". In her own personal life Sue has made dramatic changes and lost over 205 pounds. Her personal testimony, plus her research into easy activities you can do at home, gave participants wonderful ideas to enhance their own spirituality through eating well and living well. Our series will kick off again in the spring with topics such as Men and Depression. Get your walking shoes and join this active group. Grab your shoes and bikes on April 19th and join us for a healthy bike or canal walk.

Training Center for Urban Interns and Seminarians

Established by the National Presbyterian Church USA, the Intern Program is designed to place seminary students in field opportunities to learn key aspects of what it takes to turn around declining congregations often set within changing communities. CSA has been a part of the training program since it’s inception. Calvary St. Andrew’s is a training site for seminarians from Colgate Rochester Divinity School. Second year students are placed under the supervision of our pastor the Reverend Judy Lee Hay. This year we welcome Andrea Holroyd, a senior at CRCD.

Russ Roth rolls up his sleeves and pitches in where ever help is need. His love of gardening is put to good use in the CSA spring clean-up day.

Rehearsals 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

Join us and sing praises to God.

The CSA Choir welcomes all singers to join our choir.  The choir consists of more than 20 members (SATB), performing under the able direction of the Minister of Music, Donald Tirabassi.

“The CSA Choir has brought me back to God and to God’s people… Within its circle I find peace, love, comfort, warmth, friendship and so much more. I look forward to Thursday night rehearsal; it is a time of peace and quiet after a busy, sometimes frantic, day at the office. My spirit is fed as our voices blend, as we learn new anthems or dive into an old favorite.” - Nancy Lauterbach

“The choir is like a second family to me. We have a prayer circle after each practice on Thursday evenings, where we can share our concerns or ask for prayers. I know I could ask for help/advice from just about any choir member, and I would do the same for them. It’s a great group.” - Cathy Buggie

Partners in Ministry

As the lay shepherds of the church, the congregation is divided among the lay Partners in Ministry members. We each engage as often as possible with our individual shepherding group throughout the month by phone calls, e-mail, cards, home gatherings, and Sunday morning conversations. The committee meets the second Monday of each month. Our main focus is to best meet the needs of the people in our church community. Concerns (prayers, nursing home visits, hospital visits, rides to church, meetings, doctors, or delivering meals) are brought to the table for discussion and possible solutions are evaluated. All concerns and discussions are kept confidential.
